Quality of life in people who experience seizures

What is the purpose of the study?

The aim of this current study is to better understand quality of life in people who experience epileptic and/or non-epileptic seizures. We plan to investigate how seizures impact on a persons’ quality of life and to see whether different types of seizures affect people differently.

Who is organising the study?

The study is being carried out by Alicia Smith, an undergraduate psychology student from the University of Plymouth; under the supervision of Dr Paul Broks, Clinical Neuropsychologist and lecturer at the University of Plymouth.

What will be involved if I agree to take part in the study?

Participation takes approximately 30 minutes. The study involves providing consent to continue and completing a set of 4 questionnaires. Click "Continue" at the bottom if this page to participate in the survey.

Do I have to take part in the study?

No. Participation is voluntary. You are free to refuse to join the study and can take as much time as you need to decide whether you would like to take part. If you do not want to take part in the survey or to answer some of the questions, you do not need to give us a reason.

Are there any risks involved?

No. There is no obvious risk involved in this study; though this is may be an emotive topic for some individuals. The questionnaire does not ask any significantly personal information to avoid causing any distress. Participants may contact the experimenter or the project supervisor should any concern or questions arise.

Will the information obtained in the study be confidential?

Yes. All information collected from this study will be kept strictly confidential and will be used just for the purposes of the study. The survey is completed anomalously. Each questionnaire will be given a unique identification number which will only be used to send reminder letters to participants who have not returned their questionnaire or to identify responses should a participant chose to withdraw from the study.
The study will be written up as a final year dissertation project but it is anticipated that the results of this study will also be submitted to a research journal; this will not affect your anonymity.

Can I withdraw my information from the study?

Yes. Participants have the right to withdraw from the study at anytime. Consent may be withdrawn even after you have returned a completed questionnaire; simply contact us by email and let us know your identification number. However, once data analysis is complete it will not be possible to remove individual data.
